Bright Blue Gorilla is Robyn Rosenkrantz and Michael Glover.
BBG was born in 1990, when we quit our L.A. jobs, sold everything we had (except our guitars), and bought one-way tickets to Amsterdam. (It was the cheapest ticket - $199 one-way!) We played in streets, cafes, smokey bars, concert halls, EVERYWHERE!
In 1991, Utrecht (NL) music studio owner Andre Bunt gave us a break: he took pity on us (and our terrible-sounding cassette tape demo) and gave us some free studio time. With that new recording, we got a deal with Virgin Records and made 2 cds for the label. We started opening for acts like Mary Black, Townes Van Zandt, Luka Bloom, Louden Wainwright, and many others. When the Virgin deal ended, we decided to make our own CDs (teaming up with Andre Bunt and American record producer Ken Rose) and we started touring worldwide.
Back in Los Angeles in 2004, we got a lucky break and were cast in the Alec Baldwin & Matthew Broderick film The Last Shot. With that Hollywood paycheck we bought a camera and started making feature films - writing/directing/producing, the whole deal. A friend suggested that we tour cinemas with our movies, just like we toured concert halls with our music. We tried the idea and it worked like a charm. We kept touring that way, in Europe, Australia, occasionally the USA - but when Covid hit, we took a pause.
So far we've made 7 feature films, 14 CDs, and played over 4000 live shows! (We stopped counting at 4000...) We're now in Santa Monica, California, making new music and preparing some major globe-trotting plans... (Stay tuned!)
Here's a podcast and magazine interview from our last tour and movie release. Hope you enjoy them! "Best or Worst Podcast" "Voyage L.A. Magazine"
SOME TRIVIA ABOUT Bright Blue Gorilla:
- Robyn worked with Danish director Thomas Vinterberg, dubbing a voice for a 10 year old boy, in the film "It's All About Love." (Michael also did assorted voice dubbing of people in a crowd scene in the film.)
- In the late 1980's Robyn produced, wrote music for, and appeared in a major anti-drunk-driving video called "Innocent". It was played on MTV and helped bring awareness of this significant problem. (Robyn's sister, Dee Dee, was killed by a drunk driver.)
- Michael was one of the editors on the Emmy-Winning MTV series "The Osbournes". He began his editing career as a lowly dailies editor - just like Frank Capra and David Lean!
- Robyn and Michael came close to being eaten by a crocodile in the Andaman Islands. (Ask them the story sometime...)
- Robyn is in the big finale concert scene of "A Mighty Wind". Look for her in the front row.
- Michael played "The World's Weakest Man" in a commercial for Stanley Tools, which aired during the Superbowl. (That's MG demonstrating his prowess with the "balloon squeeze" and the "peanut lift".)
- As a voice-artist MG has done voiceover work for Disney, ABC television, Microsoft, and many others. He also directed voicover sessions with stars such as Mark Wahlberg, and Hollywood legends Peter Falk, George Takei, Levar Burton, Ed Asner, and Brock Peters. (Quite an honor!) Oh, let us not forget Maggie Baird (with young Finneas by her side), the mother of Billie Eilish.
- In the early BBG years (1991 to be exact), Robyn did a 10-city sold-out "solo" tour in Belgium with Donovan. Michael mixed the sound for the show because Donovan didn't want a duo opening for him, only a solo performer. (Michael says Robyn was great and won the hearts of every person in the audience!)
- In 1990, Robyn opened (again solo) for Suzanne Vega at the huge Dranouter Folk Festival in Belgium. (Michael says he's lucky Robyn didn't go off on a solo career!)
